In 1867, Alonzo Horton bought land near San Diego’s waterfront to develop a new downtown, helping shape what became the Gaslamp Quarter.
The Gaslamp Quarter’s landmark arch was installed in 1990 at Fifth Avenue and L Street, then officially dedicated in 1991.
