Rhodes Town's Old City is one of the best-preserved medieval urban complexes in the world, its walls and streets built by the Knights Hospitaller after they took the island in 1309.

The island was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue that stood at the harbour entrance until it was toppled by an earthquake in 226 BC.
